Tom S. Simbo

Chairman & USA Director

Tom S. Simbo resides in the United States and represents AID and chairs our continental meetings. As a Minister of the Gospel, he has a great passion for the holistic development of people. He has served as a pastor in several churches across Sierra Leone where he trained and helped young people to realize their God-given potentials in skills and talents.

He served the Evangelical Fellowship of Sierra Leone (EFSL) for 9 years as Director of Evangelism & Church Ministries where he worked with Team members to establish Micro-Credit schemes to aid Church and Community-women around the Country.

He served as Executive Founding member of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) and one of 12 Religious Leaders who provided motivational training for Sierra Leone’s ex-combatants which led to a peaceful disarmament in Sierra Leone’s Civil War.

Tom holds a master’s degree in Counseling and currently serves as Hospice Chaplain in Colorado.

Strategic Partnership Advisor

Chernor Bah is the Strategic Partnership Advisor at Advocacy Initiative for Development (AID).

Chernor is a feminist activist who has dedicated his life to building the power and amplifying the voices of girls and young people across the globe and in his beloved Sierra Leone. He is Co-Founder and CEO of Purposeful. Purposeful is a feminist movement-building hub for adolescent girls. They amplify girls’ voices, resource their resistance, build solidarity between and across girls’ movements, catalyse collaborative philanthropy and support innovation in grassroots programming with and for girls.

Chernor went on to lead initiatives for UNFPA (New York and Liberia), Nike Foundation (Ethiopia and Portland), CRS (the Philippines) and recently at the Population Council (New York). In 2012, Bah co-founded, alongside Gordon Brown (former British Prime Minister), A World at School – a global mobilisation and campaign organisation for global education.

Chernor has twice been appointed by the United Nations Secretary General to high level steering committees, and is an Expert Advisor to the Security Council on Youth Peace and Security. In 2018, he was appointed by the UNICEF Executive Director to the International Task Force on Workplace Gender Discrimination and Harassment.

Sylvanus Murray

Co-founder & President

Sylvanus Murray is passionate about transforming the lives of women, children, youth, and marginalized groups in Africa. He is the co-founder and president of the Advocacy Initiative for Development (AID). Sylvanus holds a Masters degree in International Relations and Humanitarian Aid and a Masters degree in Mass Communications. He is a highly skilled individual and has had the opportunity to work in complex multicultural and international environments such as the United Nations (UN). For over five years, he worked for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania. And from 2002 – 2008, he worked for the UN Peacekeeping Missions in Sierra Leone – United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) respectively.
